Although Philip V had absolute power, he never ruled as such. The illness that he had suffered since adolescence and that caused the king to have temporary attacks of depression prevented him from being able to regularly carry out his government duties. Therefore, his true power was exercised by his prime ministers, some courtiers like the princess of the Ursinos, and later his second wife, Isabel Farnesio, whom he had married in 1714.

Farnese was a temperamental, authoritarian woman with excessive personal ambition. According to the chronicles of the time, she was not excessively beautiful, her face was marked with scars from smallpox and she ate a lot at all times. Furthermore, she took advantage of her husband’s long periods of depression to gain her own power. She kept her husband as far away from the throne as she could and always showed absolute disgust towards Philip V’s children with his first wife, María Luis Gabriela de Savoy. She and the King had several children, including Charles (future Charles III).

Hours before, during the celebration in Castamar, the Queen realizes that the King has disappeared and her scream sparks concern among those present in the palace.

In the series, King Felipe V stars in episodes where he becomes upset and loses his mind. And yes, the real Felipe V was like that. All the chroniclers of the time speak of periods of acute depression, of “total inertia,” of “deep melancholy.” His illness reached such a level that he feared that they were going to poison him with a shirt full of poison and he insisted on wearing only shirts that had previously been worn by the Queen.

in his book The life and times of Fernando VI (Planeta, 1998), the historian Pedro Voltes affirms that Philip V “walked naked before strangers; He spent entire days in bed in the midst of the greatest filth, he made faces and bit himself, he sang and screamed wildly, he once hit the queen, with whom he was fighting loudly, and he repeated his attempts to escape so much that “It was necessary to put guards at the door to prevent it.”
