Cinema has allowed us to know more explicitly and closely about schizophrenia, a mental health disorder in which the person experiences different situations that prevent them from leading a fully functional life; since it is chronic and degenerative.

In the following list of films you will find stories of strength, courage and pain, which will surely help you better understand a person living with this condition.

  • Troubled Hearts (1993)

Following the death of his parents, Joon begins to experience hallucinations and delusional ideas; which makes her live in an imaginary universe. Her character, sometimes calm, can suddenly change and display her enthusiasm for starting fires.

Her brother, who dedicates all his efforts to taking care of her, loses a poker bet and must allow Sam, a flamboyant and lonely boy who has a special gift for pantomime, to move in with them. Little by little Sam conquers Joon’s heart and that causes both problems and love to intensify.

  • A Beautiful Mind (2001)

This film is based on a real case of schizophrenia that John Forbes Nash lived with, a mathematician with paranoid schizophrenia who won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994 for his contributions to game theory.

This story shows the extravagant and confusing situations that Forbes faced until he recognized that he had schizophrenia. Also, how he managed his illness to move forward with his life, his home, and his career, until he became a professor at Princeton University.
