How to help a person in crisis?

One of our specialists provides ten tips for a person to help another during an emotional crisis, where suicidal thoughts may occur. Pay attention.

Constantly, in the consultations, relatives, friends or partners of people who are experiencing or having an emotional crisis write to us. The objective of your consultation is to request guidance to help, which is why I provide the following advice to continue when faced with a moment of difficulty:

  1. Always stay calm and communicate constantly.
  2. Ask how they feel, how their emotions are and validate them.
  3. Identify why you feel that way and what situation is causing your discomfort.
  4. Reach a solution that can help alleviate the discomfort, without minimizing its emotion, for example: what happens to you can happen to anyone, stop crying, everything has a solution, life goes on.
  5. Help you do breathing exercises, meditation, and, if the feeling of not moving forward continues, you can help by changing the body’s physiology, that is, changing the temperature.
  6. Do some activity with him or her such as walking, running or doing another type of exercise.
  7. Focus on the feelings and stimulate their senses: sight (see nature), taste (eat a dessert), hearing (listen to audios that change the feeling), smell (smell some essence), touch (stroke your hair, give a hug) .
  8. Take a snapshot and find out if this has happened before, how it has been solved and measure if it is effective.
  9. If none of the above works, call your therapist and explain the situation.
  10. If you do not have one, ask for help from the emergency line and maintain constant communication indicating that you are in the process of seeking help.
