Menopause before 40 –

Menopause is the stage in which every woman enters around the age of 48, hormonal changes begin to appear and menstruation gradually disappears, but when these symptoms appear before the age of 40 it is known as early menopause. “It can affect 5 or 10% of women and it is confirmed by performing FSH tests with results of high levels, in addition to low estrogen and very low anti-Müllerian hormone,” explains the gynecologist endocrinologist, specialist in infertility and laparoscopy at our Institution. , Gustavo Gomez Tabares.

This pathology can occur due to a genetic issue, where in the patient’s family, more women have had early menopause, but also due to autoimmune diseases “such as diabetes or hypothyroidism and trauma to the ovaries due to surgeries, cysts or endometriosis,” he specifies. Dr. Gomez Tabares.

Symptoms

Among the most common signs of menopause before 40, in addition to the absence of menstruation for more than 4 months, are weight gain, hot flashes and sweating, “it can also present anxiety, depression, decreased sexual desire , disorders in the genitourinary system, among others, for which reason it is recommended to visit the doctor periodically, in order to carry out a control that allows proper management, ”says the doctor.

The treatment for managing this affectation is hormonal, which makes it possible to replace the deficit caused by the lack of estrogens, essential hormones in a woman, both for reproduction and to prevent diseases, they lower blood pressure, protect the bones, distribute the body fat and stimulate libido, so “taking adequate treatment improves quality of life, prevents the early onset of osteoporosis and the symptoms decrease,” adds the doctor.
