Infanta Leonor is the first hospital in Madrid with GEDA accreditation

This recognition, granted by the American College of Emergency Physicians, the John A. Hartford Foundation and the West Health Institute, recognizes the Infanta Leonor University Hospital in Madrid for its work in dealing with older people who come to the Emergency Department.

He Infanta Leonor University Hospital has recently obtained accreditation GEDA (Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation) in the modality of “Geriatrics in the Emergency Department”which proves that this Madrid hospital satisfactorily complies with the standards and requirements of the American GEDA program in the approach to elderly users of the Emergency Department.

The Infanta Leonor University Hospital has recently obtained the GEDA (Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation) accreditation in the discipline “Geriatrics in the Emergency Department”

Its about first hospital in the Community of Madrid in obtaining this recognition and the second in all of Spain. The accreditation obtained by the is bronze accreditationwhich is the only one that hospitals outside the United States and Canada can opt for at the moment.

ACEP Standards and Requirements

The ACEP standards and requirements in the approach to older people who come to the ER are the following:

  • The training of health personnel in geriatric medicine in the ER, doctors and nurses.
  • The existence of at least one geriatric approach protocol in the ER.
  • The availability of material that facilitates the ambulation of elderly patients in the ER with walkers and canes.
  • The facility to provide food and water at any time to the patient who needs it.

The accreditation of the Emergency Services in Geriatrics It has different levels of recognition and includes aspects such as improving care for the elderly providing comprehensive care, detecting geriatric syndromes, and promoting information and participation of people in decision-making.

In addition, it includes the implementation of procedures to adapt the discharge of elderly patients and ensure transitions between the different care resources; care based on multidisciplinary professional teams; either the adaptation of the structure of the Emergency Services to the needs of older patients.

Friendly Hospital for the elderly

In the context of the project, the Geriatrics and Emergency services of the They are working in coordination to adapt the Emergency Service to the needs of the elderly from the care and training point of view (at least one doctor and one nurse have training in Emergency Geriatrics), involving patients and their families.

Similarly, several guidelines and specific proceduress for prioritize older patients in medical assistance. Specifically, since May of this year the Hospital has had the “Delirium Code”a program for the prevention, early detection and treatment of ‘delirium’ launched by the Geriatric Service.

The structures of the Emergency Service have also been improved with endowment of material (walkers and canes) to improve the needs of these patients. The ‘Friendly Hospital for the Elderly’ project has been underway since March 2018, led by the head of Geriatrics, Dr. Fatima Brañas Baztán.
