If you have a lot of clothes to iron and you realize that the iron is dirty, don’t despair, you can clean the iron with things that you almost certainly have at home.
How to clean a ceramic griddle
- 1. With a damp cloth: Mix a little distilled water with a few drops of laundry or dish detergent. With the iron on at minimum temperature, wipe the damp cloth over the ceramic soleplate. The stains should come out without much effort.
- 2. With vinegar: Dampen a cloth with warm white vinegar and rub the base of the iron with it. For stubborn stains, add a couple of tablespoons of salt to the vinegar and repeat the operation. When finished, clean the iron well with a dry cloth.
- 3. With toothpaste: Apply it and rub it with a cloth and then remove the remains with a damp cloth.
- 4. Vinegar and salt: If the stains resist and you have not yet been able to remove the stains from the base of the ceramic griddle, try mixing the vinegar with a little salt. This mixture will be very useful to also clean the boiler. For stains that do not come off, add a couple of tablespoons of salt to the vinegar and repeat the operation. When finished, clean it well with a dry cloth.

Cleaning the iron is essential to achieve efficient ironing.
- 1. Mix a cup of white vinegar with at least two tablespoons of salt in a container. Put the mixture over low heat and prevent it from boiling.
- 4. With the iron on and at a minimum temperature, moisten a cloth in the mixture and clean the base in a circular manner, emphasizing the stains.
- 5. You can place the mixture in the boiler or in the iron tank and evaporate it.
- 6. When finished, run the heated iron over a piece of cotton fabric to remove any residue that remains on the sole with the heat.
How to clean Rowenta ironing centers
If you have an ironing center like the famous ones from Rowenta, you must take special care with the maintenance of both the boiler and the soleplate. The most common materials for ironing soles are aluminum, stainless steel and ceramic. We just saw how to clean ceramic so we will address the other two below: stainless steel and aluminum.

Whether it is a steam iron, ceramic iron or an ironing center, make sure the soleplate is free of residue.
Stainless steel:
A homemade trick that works well is to use coarse salt. You should put several tablespoons of coarse salt on a kitchen towel and let the iron heat up for a few minutes. Then pass the iron through the salt, rubbing gently from front to back. Turn off the iron and wait for it to cool.
Aluminum
To clean an aluminum soleplate of an ironing center you can use any vegetable oil, such as olive or sunflower oil. Heat the iron to an average temperature of about 100ºC and apply a little oil to the center of the surface. To safely clean aluminum and prevent scratches, you can use a steel wool pad.
How to clean steam irons

If your iron is steam takes care that the holes where the heat vaporizations are carried out are kept clean. To do this you can try to pass a hyssop for each of the holes in the iron; in turn it is recommended to you clean the tank with vinegar and a little distilled water. Some tips To clean steam iron they would be:
- For unclog the holes that may be stuck, use this trick: pass some candles to block the holes in the base of the steam iron. By passing the candle through the base and emitting heat, we get the holes to clog very easily. Next, activate the steam outlet to unclog the holes.
- Put some tablespoons of salt on a dry cloth, plug in the iron, wait for it to heat up, rub until the burn marks disappear. Once the iron is cool to the touch, we will finish cleaning it with a damp cloth.
- We can also mix warm soapy water from the dishwasher and by simply soaking a cloth in this mixture, we will make it perfect.
- With the same toothpasteif we apply it on the cold base, rub, activate the steam, iron on a fabric that is not useful, you will see how it looks impeccable.
