How a portable air conditioner works

You can also read:

The portable air conditioner is a device that has wheels and can be moved. It has an internal compressor (the condenser) that absorbs air from the room and cools it. They are usually cheaper than fixed (split) units and are increasingly compact, so they do not require much space. However, since the compressor is inside the house, they can be a little noisy.

Portable air conditioning units work in a similar way to a heat pump, but with the difference that they concentrate the indoor and outdoor units in the same device. What they do is take hot air from the environment from a grill located at the back of the equipment, cool it and push it outside. At the same time, the indoor condensing unit takes air – also from the rear grille -, heats it and sends it outside through a tube connected to a window.

The maintenance that these equipment requires is very simple. You just have to clean the filters frequently and avoid the accumulation of humidity that results from condensation when cooling the air.

This process is actually very easy. The only thing necessary is to place it in a place where there is a window nearby to remove the tube and an outlet to plug in the equipment.

Portable air conditioners come with a window adapter kit that makes installation more effective and easier. Verify that your equipment includes it. What’s more, it is advisable to measure the window opening to determine if the adapter kit can be expanded or reduced to fit perfectly. You can use it both horizontally, if your window is a guillotine type, and vertically, if you have a sliding opening.

However, if the adapter that came with your computer is not suitable for your chosen window, there is a solution. What you need to do is measure the opening and get the plexiglass cut to size at a hardware store. Once this is resolved, take the precaution of sealing the gaps between the window hose adapter and the sides of the window.

Finally, all that remains is to connect the exhaust hose that came with the laptop to the unit and the window connection bracket or adapter to the other end of the exhaust hose. Plug it in and enjoy the fresh air inside your home.

One last recommendation: If the equipment you purchased is hot-cold, do not forget to connect the drain hose when using it in heat mode. Failure to do so will cause the unit to stop operating once the water reaches the alarm level.

When purchasing a portable air conditioner, it is advisable to verify what cooling and heating capacity it must have to cover the environment you want to cool.

To know the frigories that will be needed to cool a room, we must make the calculation considering 100 or 140 frigories per m². This variation will depend on the exposure of the home to cold or heat depending on its location (north or south orientation) and the number of electronic devices in the room where the portable air device will be placed.
