Definition of the week: Manifest content and latent content

According to Freud, the manifest content It is the argument that we remember from dreams, which is different from the latent content since it is a censored and symbolic version of it, and sometimes incorporates parts of our experiences and concerns from the previous days (Myers, 2006).

He latent content, on the other hand, is made up of unconscious desires and impulses that, if expressed directly, would be threatening. Although for the most part they do not contain explicit sexual images, Freud believed that many of the dreams of adults could be analyzed as coming from erotic desires. For example, a gun could covertly represent a penis. Freud thought that through dreams we could understand our internal conflicts (Myers, 2006).
