What types of emotions exist?

Depending on the author, basic emotions are classified in different ways. For example, Pal Ekman established the following 6 basic emotions, after studying the facial expressions of a tribe in Papua New Guinea:

  • Gonna.
  • Happiness.
  • Disgust.
  • Sadness.
  • Surprise.
  • Fear.

Following this order of ideas, Daniel Goleman also proposes the same 6 basic emotions as Ekman. However, for this theorist there are also secondary ones such as jealousy, but these depend on each person.

For his part, psychologist Robert Pluchik proposes 8 types of basic emotions, which, according to him, are fundamental for human survival:

  • Acceptance.
  • Happiness.
  • Hope.
  • Dislike.
  • Sadness.
  • Fear.
  • Surprise.
  • Gonna.

But in addition to the basic ones, for Pluchik there are some advanced ones that are:

  • Scare
  • Remorse
  • Love
  • Disappointment
  • treachery
  • Submission
  • Contempt
  • Optimism
