Since the 70s Amar Bharati has not lowered his arm

Almost half a century ago he began his pilgrimage and has become an ascetic, but He is currently considered one of the most revered sadhus in all of India.. Sadhus are ascetics who lead a life of penance, seeking enlightenment. That is, people – almost always men – who one day realize that everything material that surrounds us (maya, according to Hinduism) is an illusion, it is a lie. That the phenomenal means nothing, a deception. That the truth, the transcendental is in the spirit.

Sadhus abandon everything they previously had and devote themselves to a life of asceticism, begging and penance. They are often seen in many Indian cities, waiting for someone to give them food.

Asceticism is an exercise or practice of an austere lifestyle in which one renounces all material pleasures in order to acquire habits that lead to both moral and spiritual perfection.

But Amar, in addition to putting aside his entire life, decided that he would keep his right arm raised, no matter what. That would be his penance and the goal he clung to for the rest of his life was world peace.

According to Amar, the first two years were unbearable, he felt constant pain that was torture for him, because he couldn’t even put it down to sleep.

As the years go by, The cartilage in his arm dried out and completely atrophied., to the point of no longer feeling it. In the event that Amar wanted to lower his arm, after almost 50 years, he would no longer be able to. It is considered one of the most impressive penances that a human being has ever performed.
