Prostate, a small organ that can impact the whole family

It is barely the size of an almond and is one of the most important male organs. However, its operation can drastically affect the quality of life of the couple and the entire family environment.

The prostate is a male gland located below the bladder that lines the urethra. It is the conduit that communicates the bladder with the outside, with a vital function in the erection and external secretion, destined to the production of semen and the contribution of essential substances for the survival of the spermatozoon, which ensures its fertility. Semen is a mixture of sperm and fluid produced in the prostate.

“Also, through the constant secretion of zinc, powerful proteases, such as lysine and prostate antigen, it keeps the urethra free of bacterial colonization”points out the doctor, Lupi Alejandro Mendoza, urologist at the Medical Center.

According to the specialist, with age, a series of significant changes occurs in men at the hormonal level, in the prostate and in their body. Problems with this vital male organ affect not only his health, but his quality of life.

For the World Health Organization, WHO, “Sexual health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being referred to sexuality, as a fundamental part of family development.”

Among the problems of this small organ, enlargement is one of the most frequent inherent to age. The gland becomes enlarged and it happens to almost all men as they get older. An enlarged prostate is generally called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is not cancer and does not increase the risk of prostate cancer.

“The actual cause of its enlargement is not known. Factors linked to aging and changes in the cells of the testicles may intervene in the growth of the gland”says Dr. Mendoza.

BPH is one of the most exhausting and complex diseases for men, since their quality of life is seriously affected, since the obstruction prevents the total evacuation of urine, with serious problems of all kinds.

Patients who consult for hyperplasia report that they cannot sleep, with the need to get up many times during the night to go to the bathroom.

“When they want to leave the house they think twice, because the first thing they ask is if there is a bathroom or when they arrive somewhere, where is the bathroom”says Dr. Mendoza.

The specialist asserts that many patients take time to accept the problem and consequently take time to see a doctor, which can complicate the pathology, due to the appearance of infections, urine retention, the appearance of pain and damage to the bladder. .

“When the bladder has to force itself to expel urine, it forces its muscles and over time its normal function is altered, which becomes a more complex problem”says the urologist of the Medical Center.

The green laser is one of the most effective technologies in recent years for the therapeutic treatment of the disease.

It is a new technique, less aggressive, with fewer risks for the patient, less bleeding, quick recovery and is done on an outpatient basis.

Endoscopically, surgeons insert special instruments and, based on the energy of the green laser, vaporize the prostate tissues that cause the obstruction and rehabilitate the pathway to normalize urinary function.

It is an outpatient procedure, less aggressive, with fewer risks, with less bleeding and therefore with a better recovery.

According to Dr. Mendoza, the most important thing is to consult on time, since the bladder will not yet be altered and with surgery the problem can be solved without further setbacks.
