This guide has been prepared by professionals from the Behavior Module of the Special Education Resource Center of Navarra (CREENA), and is the result of their experience and dedication as advisors to teaching professionals in early childhood and primary educational centers.

Throughout the years of CREENA’s existence, the demands for advice to care for students with selective mutism have been a constant. The experience accumulated over time, the conviction that early intervention improves the prognosis and considerably reduces the risk of consolidation of the problem, and the need to offer guidelines and intervention strategies that allow teachers to respond appropriately to the needs of these students have been the reasons that have driven the development of this guide.

Selective mutism is a behavioral disorder that begins in childhood and is characterized by the child’s difficulty interacting verbally with certain people and in certain situations. The problem usually manifests itself when the child enters preschool or enrolls in educational centers. However, in many cases, the request for help from educational center professionals is made several years after its detection. The increase in the delay between the onset of the disorder and the intervention contributes to consolidating the child’s difficulties and increasing the child’s resistance to intervention strategies.

Early detection and early intervention are, therefore, very effective measures to intervene with these students. This guide, which is aimed at professionals in educational centers and especially early childhood education teachers, provides original material to carry out this early detection “Questionnaire for the early detection of selective mutism”. It also provides information about the genesis and development of the disorder, provides instruments for detection and evaluation; and presents proposals, guidelines and guidelines for intervention in family and school settings.
