(PDF) Guide: How to carry out the cognitive restructuring technique

Cognitive restructuring (CR) is one of the most common techniques in consultation, although its application is not easy. A good knowledge of the disorder to be treated is necessary and mental agility and creativity are needed to maintain a fluid and satisfactory interaction with the patient.

As a cognitive technique, CR is primarily used to identify and correct negative thinking patterns. The technique consists of the discussion of negative automatic thoughts that occur in situations that cause anxiety or any other type of emotional disturbance (for example, “They think I’m boring”) and their replacement with more rational beliefs or thoughts (such as “I don’t “I can read other people’s minds, they’re probably tired now.”) As thoughts are confronted and questioned, their ability to cause stress or anxiety weakens.
