Myths and legends of Paraguay: The yerba mate plant

If they enjoyed good weather, the crops were good, but when the weather was not good they fed on fruits and honey from the Guaraní mountain.

One day, as the sun was setting, a person with a pleasant and gentle appearance arrived at the farm. With few words he asked the man to allow him to spend a night with them, the next day he would continue on his way. The farmer accepted without problems, because he was a good-hearted man.

At dawn, the traveler grabbed his cane and his bag to continue on his way, but first he said to the farmer:

– I am sent from heaven, I have come to teach and reward the good. They call me in these lands Pa’i Zume. And since I knew that you were living in the solitude of the jungle to save your dear daughter from all kinds of dangers, I have come here where I found the most generous lodging: you offered me the only chicken you had, and you gave me your bed. As a reward for what I have received from you, I will ensure that your daughter never dies: I will turn her into a plant. Men will cut its branches and tear off its leaves, but it will sprout more without any problem.

The messenger from heaven said goodbye and continued on his way. He went to the side of dawn, to other remote places, who knows where, carried by the hand of God. The beautiful young woman became the plant of the Ka’a.

Since then, the branches and cut leaves of yerba mate are toasted and ground so that after barley, either with hot or cold water, they serve men as a restorative and stimulating drink.
