Myths and Legends of Mexico: The Headless Horseman of Puebla

The Headless Horseman, a legend that tells about a regular customer of the cantina, arrived that day asking his friends for a few pesos to take his sick son to the doctor. But those rascals found in the misfortune of his companion a reason to continue having fun, one of them told him: -We don’t have a penny, but I’ll share a secret with you. They say that if you ride black horse running down the hill and manages to tame him, he will take him to the cave of his former master, who is full of gold. And he can grab whatever he wants for his kid.

Of course that was a lie, they had invented it at that moment, to make fun of their friend. But the other was so desperate that he headed up the hill, and on the branch of a tree, waited for the horse and let himself fall on it. With so much neighing and movement, the man’s head was hanging on that same branch and its blood completely covered the animal’s eyes. The beast started the race, with the man’s body on its back, his hands had remained firmly attached to the fur and in a few seconds both fell down the cliff. Man and beast were now united by a bond of blood and deathit was not known which was one and which was the other.

The subjects did not talk about what happened to anyone, but; At dawn of each next day, they found upon some door the burn of a horseshoe.
