In Spain there are 2.63 million elderly people with disabilities

In Spain there are 2.63 million people with disabilities over the age of 65, according to the Survey on disability, personal autonomy and situations of dependency. Year 2020 (EDAD-Hogares 2020) of the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Refering to specific rate of disability among those over 65 years of agethere are 291.4 cases per thousand inhabitants in this age group, being higher in the case of women (335.2 per thousand) than in that of men (235.5 per thousand).

Compared to data provided by the previous disability survey, conducted in 2008, the population of people with disabilities over the age of 65 residing in family homes has increased by about 400,000 peoplewhile the specific rate of disability in this age group has slightly decreased.

The mobility problems were the most frequent type of disability among people aged six and over, with a rate of 54.0 per thousand inhabitants. By sex, the rate was higher among women (68.5 compared to 38.9 for men). All types of disability affected women more than men. The greatest differences were found in mobility problems and difficulties in carrying out housework, where prevalence rates in women nearly double those in men.

This survey has been carried out with the objective of meeting the demand for information from Public Administrations and numerous users, such as organizations of the Third Sector of Social Action, providing a Statistical basis for planning policies for people with disabilities that allow the promotion of personal autonomy and the prevention of dependency situations.
