Differences in pornography use in men and women

The consumption of pornography among men and women has always been a taboo topic that few people dare to talk about in public.

In more conservative societies, the fact that a person views pornography can be associated with sexual depravity, which often leads to rejection and stigmatization; However, how many of us have asked ourselves the possible factors that motivate this practice?

He Journal of Social and Personal Relationships has published an interesting article about the reasons behind pornography consumption in men and women. According to experts, everything revolves around the relationship between sexual satisfaction and viewing different types of sexual content.

According to Nathan D. Leonhardt of Brigham Young University, the study focused on evaluating how conventional pornography, with explicit depiction of sexual acts and non-explicit provocative sexual media focused on women, is associated with various aspects of satisfaction. sexual (time spent in foreplay, variety, overall satisfaction, frequency, love and affection, time spent in sexual intercourse).

The study surveyed 858 people in committed romantic relationships about their exposure to mainstream heterosexual pornography and other forms of sexually provocative media, such as an image of a woman in underwear in a provocative pose. The researchers found that men who watched more porn also tended to be more dissatisfied with the amount of variety in their sex life and more dissatisfied with the amount of time they spent in the act of sex.

According to Leonhardt, all of this suggests that men who watch pornography may be disappointed by their partners’ lack of ability or desire to perform the sexual acts portrayed in pornography, which are explicit.

Men vs. Women: what differences are there?

Pornography use is associated with lower satisfaction with sexual variety and time spent having sex, but only for men. In the case of women, the researchers found no negative connection between satisfaction and pornography consumption, perhaps because their male partners are more willing to participate in the sexual acts depicted in pornography (kamasutra positions, sexual fantasies…). .

Furthermore, for women, provocative sexual media was particularly problematic as it was also associated with lower satisfaction with sexual variety, overall sexual satisfaction, and satisfaction with time spent engaging in sexual intercourse. This may be because women’s use of sexual media perhaps leads to self-objectification, which could decrease the quality and enjoyment of sexual relations.

In general, Leonhardt concludes that there is more than one possible explanation and way to interpret these results:

  • On the one hand, the association may be because men are disappointed at not being able to engage in sexual acts depicted in pornography.
  • Or it may also be men who are not satisfied with the variety of their sexual relationship and are looking at pornography to find new ideas.

Leonhardt cautions that how both partners’ moral evaluation of pornography consumption is influenced, as well as the extent to which couples view content together, remains to be analyzed.
