Color models: four primaries, RYB, RGB and CMYK

Color models or color systems have different uses depending on the initial purposes of each one.

The most widespread is the one corresponding to red, yellow and blue, called RYB, although it is not the only one.

Old four-primary model

The ancient Greeks initially built a model with four, which were associated with four elements due to the similarity with them, being ocher represented the earth, blue for the sky, green for water and red for fire.

Applications

It was supported by Alberti, an important architect, who represented each one in triangles, rectangles and circles.

The use of this system was quite frequent in the painting of the time, obtaining different colors with their combinations.

Traditional RYB coloring model

It is the best known model that is based on three primary colors RYB (red, yellow, blue), that is, red, yellow and blue. Starting from only these three, it is possible to create, and in turn, tertiary colors, depending on the case of those implemented.

Applications

It is one of the most used to teach principles in the arts, being the colors that are learned in school to understand their classification.

The union of these colors, especially in crayons or paints, serves to experiment in the school stage about the results obtained with the mixtures.

RGB color model

The colors that make up this RGB (red, green, blue) model, which are red, green and blue, indicated as additive primary colors or, in other words, colored lights on a black background that allow the creation of more colors in combination among them.

Applications

We see them every day through different screens, both computers and televisions as well as screens.

Basically with this we can create the color images that we view in different media with screens of any type.

CMYK color model

With the CMYK color model (cyan, magenta, yellow, key), which are cyan, magenta, yellow and black, we have subtractive colors, which are translated as pigment colors by subtracting each one at a certain level to generate a specific tone.

Applications

The pigments are subtracted when the printing action is carried out on the screens, in order to bring the ink of the colors from the screen directly to the paper.

If when printing certain images with certain colors they are slightly different, this is because the model for viewing and printing are different.
