Celebration of International Color Day

Color Day is celebrated internationally every March 21, in more than 30 countries for just a decade, weeks after the .

The intention of this date is honor colors for the influence they have from the visual perception of each individual, influencing in many ways.

Why is Color Day celebrated on March 21?

In 2008, the Portuguese Color Association proposed to the International Color Association to establish a celebration date.

It was the following year, in 2009, that the countries belonging to the AIC agreed on the date, but why did they choose this one?

Leonhard Oberascher, member representing Austria, pointed out that March 21 was the day on which the two equinoxes occur, that is, both day and night were more or less the same length. In this way, light and shadow influenced the observable colors to the same extent.

Furthermore, it is when spring begins in the northern hemisphere, while in the south, autumn begins, two colorful seasons.

For both compelling reasons, the representatives of each AIC country agreed on this date and not others that were tentative.

International Color Day logo

At the 2012 congress, a contest was held to choose a representative logo for Color Day in Taipei.

Designer Hosanna Yau won the competition for the logo developed, with an explanation associated with one of the reasons why the date of March 21 was chosen:

The two circles form an eye. One half wears them and the other half is in black, representing light and darkness, day and night, a feast for the eye to take shape on International Color Day.
