So we can take care of our brain –

Headaches, strokes or epilepsy are some of the most common brain diseases, which can occur at any age and affect both men and women.

In the case of migraines or headaches, they tend to be more frequent in children, adolescents and young adults, while vascular disease in older adults and epilepsy in extreme ages of life (children and older adults), so explains our neurologist Angélica Gómez López, leader of the Neurology area at the Grupo Quirónsalud Clinic.

And precisely to learn a little more about brain diseases and how we can take care of it, our specialist answers some questions about this organ.

What are the most recurring diseases?

The first cause of consultation for brain diseases is headache. “Usually they are primary, that is, they are not caused by injuries that could put life at risk, but rather, by alterations in the sensitivity of the face and head,” explains the Neurologist.

Another of the most frequent causes of consultation is vascular disease, which manifests itself with a stroke, hemorrhage or stroke, which can be treated in a timely manner if care is provided within the first 3 hours after the situation occurred.

Epilepsy is also among the most common diseases of the brain. It consists of the abnormal discharge of a group of cells in the brain that generates a seizure, although there are epileptic seizures that may not have symptoms of movement and only have temporary ‘disconnection’.

Symptoms that occur

  • Migraine is the most frequent headache. Its intensity can be moderate in the middle of the head, it is of the pulsatile type and as an additional symptom vomiting, vision disturbances or sensitivity can occur.
  • Cerebrovascular disease has abrupt symptoms with loss of vision, weakness of an arm or leg, slurred speech, and unsteady walking.
  • Epilepsy generates convulsive or non-convulsive seizures.

How to take care of the brain?

  • Do activities to exercise the brain, such as reading, writing, word games.
  • Eat healthy.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Avoid the consumption of hallucinogens, alcohol or tobacco.
  • Have spaces for rest, sleep properly.
  • If you are diabetic, hypertensive, have obesity or cholesterol problems, you must take your medications and have control with the specialist.
  • Attend vision and hearing check-ups.

Keep in mind

  • The brain does not perceive pain.
  • Blows have been shown to have a significant impact on diseases of the brain. Impact sports can cause long-term memory and behavior problems.
  • People who are at higher risk of brain disease are those with hypertension, diabetes, obese, sedentary, and those who consume psychoactive substances.

At our Grupo Quirónsalud Clinic we have a multidisciplinary team of specialists in Neurology, as well as advanced technology to treat brain diseases.
