Hand; One of the most delicate organs and most exposed to injuries

“Due to these activities, inflammation or pain often occurs and are the main causes of hand injuries. Most people associate it with carpal tunnel, but this problem does not have pain as a symptom,” says the doctor, Juliana Rojasorthopedist, hand surgeon, del Medical Center.

There are 29 bones in total, nineteen in the hand and fingers, eight in the wrist, and two in the forearm, all exposed, at high risk, to injuries.

According to the surgeon, there are inflammations due to manual activity, tendinitis due to different activities, metabolic diseases, such as diabetes or hypothyroidism. It may be an inflammation of the thumb, of the flexor tendons, of the extensor tendon of the thumb, which is the result of some alteration of these structures and not precisely of the activity to which it is attributed.

The wrist and hand have very little protection, their bones are more likely to fracture than other bones in the body. They are the first affected in falls, because, by reflex, we are given to put our hands to mitigate the impact. For this reason, falls and blows are also the most frequent causes of wrist and hand injuries.

“Trauma and sports leave much more serious injuries that require surgery. Traumatic work injuries, wounds, fractures or sports activities, because today there are many sports where the hands are used a lot and inflammatory lesions occur”, says Dr. Rojas.

The specialist recommends basic measures for the protection of the hands and the prevention of injuries, according to the daily activity, work or use that is given to them.

Likewise, rest from repetitive activities, hold objects with your whole hand, that is, avoid pressure on a single finger, exercise regularly and maintain a balanced and healthy diet, rich in vitamin D and calcium.

Healthy habits, such as adapting to a correct body position, using mouse pads, with wrist support, and keeping forearms supported and parallel when typing on the computer. When the activities are very long and static, stretching is essential to avoid inflation and pain.
